Auction draft questionnaire (post draft)
Overall strategy

1. What was your initial approach going into the Auction Draft?
Ok here comes my thesis! My approach was developed based on 3 aspects (I won’t be offended if your eyes glaze over…)
a) The roster construction implied by the lineup flexibility, scoring and most importantly contract cap & extension options
b) My “patented” auction calculator which allows me to compare the value of typical production per position rank (details follow)
c) my desire to go pretty young and avoid big $ on the players I perceived as risky, hence my target player pool was pretty small actually

As far as b) goes, I construct a big ass spreadsheet with the past performance of each position (ignore actual players just WR1, TE7 etc). I use this to determine rough expected production and the likely overall player pool that would cover 12 optimal starting lineups. Based on other auctions I put some rough markers for expected costs and then use that to set baseline pts over replacement / $ values. This allows me to look for where the value lies and what my target roster would be. This of course gets adjusted as the actual auction prices unfold.
My player rank list then feeds into this so far any given player I can say I expect him to be ~WR10 and there production will be x. Then I see how much I’m prepared to pay.

I went in with a few archetypes for how my budget could look based on the values I liked and primarily different based on which positions I ended up getting a stud at. So early on I dove in on all the studs up to a certain point and once the market was set and I had acquired my first few high $ guys I could plan the rest accordingly.
All along I went in planning to spend somewhere in the region of 90%+ on my starting lineup. I knew there would be plenty of $2-$7 bench options.

c) made life a lot easier this time round as I had literally crossed of like 50% of the top 100 names or so. That made it much easier to focus. I was quite happy to get older guys later on since I would have a young core and wasn’t such a big deal to drop a small amount on the older guys. Didn’t end up with too many in the end tho.

2. Did you end up sticking to your initial draft strategy?
Pretty much, I am such a planner. My biggest challenge is realizing when to deviate substantially from the plan since I can usually always execute the one I go in with since I prepare pretty thoroughly. What was different for me this time is that while in most startups I ignore RBs the based on a) some of my other teams being let down by not finding an RB and b) the picture that looked so ugly for 2012 startups I decided to spend a decent chunk on some guys

3. How did you divide your spending on Offense and Defense? Any additional strategies here?
Heavily weighted towards O because in my experience
a) IDP generally easier to find and consistency very low in certain positions
b) Most people spend on O despite balanced scoring

4. Any observations about the other owner’s approaches in the Auction Draft? (Good, Bad, Ugly, Surprising)
Nice variety of approaches – wasn’t as shocked by the big spenders. I think what I found most surprising was the guys in TT that were patient but then had (imho) too much $ to spend on middle to poor talent.
Always admire those who can wait and then know when to spend for value without getting stuck with too mucb cash

5. What was your biggest “oh shit” moment of the draft?
When I realized my high bid on Rice ($180uish) would have destroyed my budget – thank goodness I got him for $50 less than the other 2 elite RBs

Reflecting on your spending
6. How did the Auction go compared to your expectations and your previous experiences?

Done my fair share so kinda know what to expect (and also what to look out for in auction setup that will appeal to me)
I agree with Lance that the DD auction went as expected – was not at all surprised to see guys approaching 20% of budget for a single player.

7. How happy are you with how you drafted? Where do you think you overspent?
Pretty happy. Definitely overspent on Ryan but that was conscious – I paid for youth. In hindsight getting Rivers (my fallback target) and an extra $30 may have made a big difference but we shall see. I got bid up a fair amount on Ryan after he had been on the board for a while so by then I was committed!

8. Was there a player you missed out on and thought you would own before the draft?
Nope I generally only exclude guys rather than get anyone at all costs. Its all about value for me

9. Who was the one guy on your team that you couldn’t live without and had to have on your team?
Nope – see answer to 8. Sometimes I do try to grab guys I like (ie like to own some stock if I haven’t managed to in other leagues) Little, Brown and Celek fell into that category but I wasn’t gonna overpay for them

10. Who was, in your opinion, the greatest steal on your team?
I think it will turn out to be Fred Jackson (if he does a good impression of his 2011 performance). Other candidates are

Assessing your squad
11. What draft grade would you give yourself (A, B, C, or D)?

B+?
12. What are your overall thoughts on your team?
Pretty happy with my squad – managed to execute my strategy so only time will tell how it pans out. I feel I have a great OFF side of the ball and if my ability to find solid IDP contributors at good value holds true I’ll be in great shape. I love that I have lots of youth but it comes in the form of guys who can put up big numbers already in 2012.
13. Who are the 3 key players to your franchise?
I don’t really believe there are only 3 but apart from the obvious answer of my 3 most expensive guys I’d say: Charles to recover from his injury, Cutler to put up numbers with his new weapons and one of my $20ish WRs to step up big (Brown, Little, La Fell etc)
14. What do you perceive to be your team’s greatest weakness?
I will be below most for DT pts and it may take me a little time to figure out which DBs to start
15. What is the best (most Depth) position on your team?
Probably QB or WR. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say I could have 3 QB1’s, 3 WR1s and then a few leading receivers for their NFL teams on top of those 3.
16. What are 3 things to watch for, out of your team in 2012?
Ryan taking another step forward, V Brown emerging as SD WR to own & Dumervil & Wimbley to perform as strong DE1s
17. What record would you predict for your team for 2012?
Tough division will depress this a bit – 7-5?
18. What record would you predict for your team in the year 2015?
Either I say no clue or I take the slightly contratrian viewpoint and say I will probably be rebuilding around then having peaked in 2013/2014…

Dealing with the competition
19. Which other team was the biggest pain in your ass?

A few of the “bid up a $ at a time” guys frustrated me early on but that seemed to stop thank goodness. Lance I realized early on that we were chasing a lot of the same players so if I had to pick one it’d be him. Unfortunately he has more $ to take all the LBs I liked when they came on the board!

20. Who was your MVP (Best Pick) of the draft?
This question I interpreted differently than most – I am going to give the best pick of the auction, not necessarily the one I made.

21. Who do you feel has the strongest team right now?
Well according to my draft grades I submitted to James its close between Wyoming, England, Eagles and Spazz. I think I am in the mix and I actually don’t put any of the TT teams in the top 5…
