Auction Draft Questionnaire (Post Draft)

Overall strategy
1. What was your initial approach going into the Auction Draft?
My initial pass at preparing for the draft was to look at the biggest % differences b/w baseline starters and backups. After running my numbers, I wanted to focus on 3 areas based on what I perceived to be the biggest drop off from Key Players and Depth… The 4 positions I wanted to focus on were: DE, TE, QB, DT and then LB.

2. Did you end up sticking to your initial draft strategy?
Pretty close. I think I was too quick to join the spending spree on a few of the guys that I had targeted, but by and large, I did a pretty good job of holding off on players as their numbers got too high for me.

3. How did you divide your spending on Offense and Defense? Any additional strategies here?
In general, when I play in 22 Starter leagues where the defense means something, I want to focus on D. I think that Defense is largely overlooked and undervalued; which is not to say that folks over-value offense. I think that teams tend to "focus" more on defense on the theory that you can "fill-in" Defense. I'm more of the opposite, I'd rather have key, consistent contributors on Defense and work to fill in the Offense.

4. Any observations about the other owner’s approaches in the Auction Draft? (Good, Bad, Ugly, Surprising)
* I think I was surprised by some of the numbers that guys were going for. I think the teams that were able to hold off for a week or two before making their moves were in a good position.
* I was surprised by the number of folks that only wanted 40 guys. That really took me back b/c most leagues that I'm in guys complain that they can't "roster" more guys and you finally have an opportunity to have more players and teams went with the basic. I had planned on 50 players.
* I was also surprised at how expensive the big DTs were going for.

5. What was your biggest “oh shit” moment of the draft?
When Terrell Suggs tore his achilles and I knew I was the high bidder.

Reflecting on your spending
6. How did the Auction go compared to your expectations and your previous experiences?
I was surprised at how many "studs" were nominated early. Most of my auction experience was not to nominate Round 1 guys right away… I was surprised to see that the first 36 nominees were pretty much the top 40 players.

7. How happy are you with how you drafted? Where do you think you overspent?
Pretty happy. I thought I overspent on Jared Allen and Suggs -- but like I said earlier, I wanted stud DE. I think by the end of the auction though, my DEs are very solid. I like my Defense overall and find it hard to fill up my secondary before seeing Training Camps and PreSeason games - which is where I normally find my CBs and non-stud Safeties

8. Was there a player you missed out on and thought you would own before the draft?
Stafford. Far and away my favorite player. I thought I was a crazy person that I'd be willing to go to 14% of my budget for him… so when he went above that, I had to bow out and was kinda bummed, but I know if I had him for what he eventually went for, I would have been more bummed.
The other would have been Perry Riley. Looking back, I probably should have gone a bit higher, but b/c I had targeted Kelvin Sheppard, I held off.

9. Who was the one guy on your team that you couldn’t live without and had to have on your team?
There was a few that I'm happy to say I would have paid a lot more for: Titus Young, Kelvin Sheppard, and Phillip Rivers (who I viewed as the last elite QB)

10. Who was, in your opinion, the greatest steal on your team?
Probably Kelvin Sheppard or Quinton Carter

Assessing your squad
11. What draft grade would you give yourself (A, B, C, or D)?
Time will tell, but I liked my draft… Probably a B

12. What are your overall thoughts on your team?
I like it. I like the youth on Defense who I think will be solid foundations for years to come.

13. Who are the 3 key players to your franchise?
Phillip Rivers, Titus Young and one of my DEs being Top5.

14. What do you perceive to be your team’s greatest weakness?
WRs. I wanted Wallace + Titus Young more than anyone and beyond that I have some guys who will have to improve. But, at the end of the day, I wanted enough guys where I could "get by" at WR.

15. What is the best (most Depth) position on your team?
Defensive End: Jared Allen + Terrell Suggs + Sheard + Cameron Wake + depth guys like Dunlap, Bennett, LoJack + and my top Rookei dE - Irvin

16. What are 3 things to watch for, out of your team in 2012?
Will Rivers rebound? Will the IDP side of things make up for other shortcomings? Have the young secondary guys contributed?

17. What record would you predict for your team for 2012?
A winning Record.

18. What record would you predict for your team in the year 2015?
No friggin clue. I think there will be a lot of turnover on my team.

Dealing with the competition
19. Which other team was the biggest pain in your ass?
I was really surprised I didn't have a team that stuck out. In general, I think most of the guys I had targeted I had a pretty high proxy

20. Who was your MVP (Best Pick) of the draft?
Kelvin Sheppard for $4. I would have gone WAY higher on him.

21. Who do you feel has the strongest team right now?
Not sure. I think everyone did a pretty good job. I don't think there is a clear cut "winner." But, that's probably b/c of how I approach the draft.. I think a lot of teams had certain positions that were solid, but owners were diverse enough in their philosophies to make it so that you couldn't be real strong across the board.

Based on Vince's thread....

The last War Buck tx for the Gadabouts was Oct 30th...

Acquired Stevie Brown for $1 during waivers...

Are we supposed to put our waiver amounts in here? Isn't that tracked on the site? I thought we only put those WB transactions that werent' automatically done on the site in here.

-1 WB's

recorded by Vince

P.S.- Thank You Brad for complying. Yes, waiver amounts should go in here as well. Reason being is that it is my job to double check that everything in terms of war bucks is accurate and running smoothly on the MFL site. Im the backup to the MFL site. The only way I can do this efficiently is if people just post ALL of their war buck transactions in their threads.

I activated Ray Lewis today as news reports indicate that he may be coming off IR. I didn't recall how quickly we'd have to make the back to active roster from IR move; but since I had the room, I did it today even though no one knows if he'll really be coming off IR.
