Jason Pierre-Paul said he's only reached about 50 percent of his potential. Analysis: It's scary to think that Pierre-Paul is only in his third NFL season. Last year, he terrorized the league to the tune of 16.5 sacks and 86 tackles. JPP is right there with Jared Allen in terms of IDP options along the defensive line.

The National Football Post's Dan Pompei is hearing that Jason Pierre-Paul will become the Giants' full-time left end in 2013. Analysis: Justin Tuck is expected to focus primarily on right end, and the Giants don't want the two flip-flopping sides as much as they did in recent years. With Osi Umenyiora headed out the door, Pierre-Paul and Tuck will both be counted on to play full complements of 2013 snaps. JPP has predominantly played right end in his career, but is stout enough to contain the run-heavy left edge.

The most amusing part of this story is the "Tuck will be counted on to play a full complement of 2013 snaps."

Jason Pierre-Paul insists he was in shape last season. Analysis: Coach Tom Coughlin recently attributed JPP's down 2012 to conditioning issues, but he swears that's not the case. "I was always in great shape," Pierre-Paul claimed. "I'm still the same size this year. People say I look slimmer but I'm the same weight." According to JPP, he played at 273 pounds last season, and is currently 274. Still only 24, JPP is a good bet to rebound from his 6.5-sack 2012.

He was so much more productive and disruptive than his numbers let on.

Going from his second season in the NFL to his third, there was a tremendous drop in production for Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul. He went from 16.5 sacks in 2011 to 6.5 last season, and he accumulated 20 fewer tackles.

Now, we might have a pretty good explanation for why that happened.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pierre-Paul played through a bad back injury last season, receiving multiple epidurals during the season just to get him through, and he's undergoing surgery Tuesday morning in Los Angeles.

Schefter writes the belief is that Pierre-Paul would be recovered by Week 1 of the 2013 regular season. But the surgery also means that Pierre-Paul likely will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

As for why Pierre-Paul waited until June to get this back surgery, that remains unclear at this point.

In 2012, the back pain started early for Pierre-Paul, but he attributed it to his normal body schedule and how he usually had back pain early in the season. He also had back problems in 2011.

120 something I think. Mike won him and I won Gronk. I traded Gronk for JPP and some extras. Ironic.

Giants RE Jason Pierre-Paul (back surgery, active/PUP) still can't predict if he'll be ready for Week 1. Analysis: "Maybe. Maybe not," Pierre-Paul said Saturday. "We'll see." Per JPP, "the whole discomfort is gone" in his surgically repaired back, and he feels no restrictions. However, Pierre-Paul's back injury caused "weakness" down his right leg and his recovery timetable is not set. Mathias Kiwanuka will hold down the right end spot opposite Justin Tuck for however long Pierre-Paul is out of commission.

I'd rather he sit until week 4 and be 100% than come back too soon.

Jason Pierre-Paul did not play in the base defense during Sunday's Week 2 loss to the Broncos. Analysis: Still working his way back into shape off back surgery, Pierre-Paul is playing a rotational role. Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka were the defensive ends in base formations. It led to five tackles and no sacks for Pierre-Paul, who had one tackle and one sack in the opener.
I haven't plugged him in yet. Waiting until he's 100%

Pierre-Paul, who was in significant pain before limping off the field in the fourth quarter Sunday, was later seen jogging on what was diagnosed as a knee contusion, the Newark Star-Ledger reports. Analysis: It sounds like he could have returned to the game were it not out of hand. We'll keep an eye on his injury, but for now, it seems like Pierre-Paul dodged a bullet.

The New York Giants could wait on working on a new deal for DE Jason Pierre-Paul until after the 2014 season, according to Dan Graziano. Graziano points out that Pierre-Paul's physical issues could give the team pause when it comes to talking about a new contract.

I hope he gets his shit together.

Jason Pierre-Paul reported to the Giants offseason program at 270 pounds.
Analysis: Pierre-Paul played at 285 last year. He's still rehabbing back and shoulder injuries but said he's "very" healthy and plans to "play the game like I'm 21 again." JPP avoided offseason surgery and should be 100 percent for minicamp and training camp. He has just 8.5 sacks the past two seasons. Entering the final year of his contract, we expect a major bounce-back from the 25-year-old.

I'm optimistic.

JPP basically signed a 5 yr deal. The 6th year was voidable by the player 5 days after the Superbowl. JPP exercised this option due to the fact that it called for a base salary of a mere 680k in 2015.

JPP was paid approx. 16M over the past 5 yrs. Last year (2014) he was paid approx. 4.6M. Thus, the NYG knew this was coming. JPP will likely be looking in the 12M/yr minimum range to 16M/yr range per year on a long term deal.

They can still tag him though, no? I doubt they will since that's a pretty damn pricey tag.

Yes, they can still tag him. Though that is unlikely for two reasons. One, the NYG don't like going that route if at all possible. Two, the money on a tag is fully guaranteed and all of it has to fit within that years cap. The cost to tag JPP would cusp on the 14 to 15 M likely. There are two 16M guys, Two 12M guys and a 14M guy.

A source tells ESPN's Adam Schefter that the Giants will use the franchise tag on free agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul if no long-term deal is reached by the March 2 deadline.

Analysis: Multiple reports have stated the two sides are not particularly close on a contract, likely because Pierre-Paul's play has been uneven over the last three years under the weight of injuries. So a one-year franchise tender worth roughly $14.7M makes sense. The Giants do not want to let a 26-year-old, homegrown and elite (when healthy) pass-rusher walk out on them. JPP is going to play for the Giants in 2015

As both a Giants and JPP fan this makes me happy.

He's a nice guy to have on a one year deal though. He's had so many nagging injuries that they may want to see him with another year healthy before giving a long term deal.

Smart move by the Giants. They would have been really hurting on the defensive front if they would have let him walk. Now they need too shore up the rest of that bad defense

Andy Slater of WINZ in Florida reports Giants unsigned franchise player Jason Pierre-Paul suffered a "severe" hand injury during a fireworks accident on the fourth of July.

JPP is from Florida and played college ball at USF. He has not signed his franchise tender and therefore is currently not under contract. If the hand injury is severe enough, the Giants could rescind Pierre-Paul's tender and be off the hook for his $14.8 million salary, sending JPP into unrestricted free agency. We'll wait for the rumors to be confirmed to pass along anything definitive, but there are whispers that JPP may have lost fingers and/or parts of his hand.

Shocked

He'll have a better club move now. I live in NJ where fireworks are banned. But was in Fort Lauderdale visiting my dad yesterday and the fireworks were awesome. A bunch of random people were lighting them off on the beach about 50 yards away.

I bet he was drinking. Alcohol and fire are always a recipe for disaster.

Bet regardless he'll never light and throw again. He'll light and run to fuck away.

I learned as a kid not to light and throw the big stuff cause I watched my cousin blow a finger off with a m80. Sometimes the fuse burns instantly which I'll be was the case with jpp

Apparently, JPP had rented a van filled with tons of fireworks and a neighbor tweeted out a picture of it before the 4th.

My uncle lost his index finger at work. He said the worst part was when he went to scratch his ear and ended up "stumping" it. He said it took forever to get use to scratching his ear hole using the pinkie.
