W. The Franchise Tag Empty
PostSubject: W. The Franchise Tag   W. The Franchise Tag EmptyWed Jan 25, 2017 5:33 pm

W.1 The Franchise Tag (50 WBs)
This tag gives owners the ability to receive compensation of a 1st round pick in the event that this player is signed by another team in the restricted free agency (RFA) auction.  Teams can use one Franchise Tag each year.  Franchise Tags cannot be banked for use later.  It is a "use it or lose it" option.

The RWP will designate a thread for this tag on the forum.  Owners may post their intended tag and edit that post until the deadline at which point the thread will be locked and the tags posted will be applied.

A. Franchise Tags can only be used on RFAs.

B. If a player that has the Franchise Tag placed on him is signed by another team during the RFA period the team that signs him must compensate the player's former team with a 1st round pick in the upcoming draft. If a team does not have a 1st round draft pick in the upcoming draft, a 1st round pick for the next draft is acceptable but the team losing the player will be compensated with the final bid price as well.  Compensation must be within a 2-year period.

1. If a team doesn't have a 1st round pick in the next two (2) drafts,  they cannot bid on any Franchise Tagged players.

2. All bids made on Franchise Tagged players must include the amount of the bid as well as the specific draft pick accompanying the bid.  If the team has pick(s) for the upcoming draft, those must be used.  Only teams with no available qualifying picks in this draft may use picks from the next draft. Since future picks are undetermined in order, the team bidding will accompany their bid with the specific pick being included (ie. 2014 Rd 1 pick of the Utah Spazz).

3. As long as your draft pick is involved in a current high bid, it is not eligible to be traded.

4. Owners must be in possession of a valid compensation pick to start bidding on a player who has been tagged.  Violations will result in owner fines.

5. If pursuing more than one tagged player at the same time, an owner must abide by all rules at all times.  This means that at the time of a bid, a pick from the current year must be used if owned.  If a qualifying current year pick is locked up in an active bid, then a future pick may be used in the other auction.  The status of the picks must ALWAYS be considered.  Just because you started pursuing the second auction with a future pick does NOT mean you can continue with that pick if the first auction changes and frees up your current year pick.  Reach out to the RWP or RWVP if you are unclear on this policy or have any questions prior to making any movements like this. (January 2024)

C. The 50 WBs go towards the player. If a team wants to bid on your player during the RFA period the bidding must start at 51 WBs because he is now held at 50 WBs by the current owner.  In the event the player signs with another team, the tagging team will be returned the 50 WBs for tagging him if compensated with an upcoming draft pick.  If the compensatory pick is delayed a year, the tagging team will get the entire final bid price as added compensation.

D. If the team that placed the Franchise Tag on said player wins the auction they are responsible for the difference in the final price.  (team already paid the first 50WB)

E. The team that is awarded the player may give him a contract of any length.
