Man you hate to see this. At least he made $1.5 Million by the age of 24, not many can say that. Hopefully he was smart with it before he gets a real job.

WOW - THATS A LITTLE SURPRISING - THOUGHT IT WOULD BE CONCUSSION RELATED, BUT A SHOULDER INJURY?

LOL - I JUST SAW THIS ON MFL PLAYER NEWS

"(Rotoworld) CBS' Jason La Canfora reports the Ravens have made "considerable progress" on an extension with restricted free agent ILB Zach Orr. Analysis: A 2014 UDFA, Orr made the first 15 starts of his career in 2016, tallying 132 tackles, three picks and a forced fumble as a three-down player. He graded out poorly in Pro Football Focus' ratings as both a run stopper and pass rusher, but the Ravens obviously liked what they saw on film. Orr turns 25 in June."

I thought concussion too.. But, I don't think it's a shoulder.

From the article:

Quote :
The Baltimore Sun first reported Orr's ailment as a congenital neck condition and that he is expected to announce his retirement at the team's facility on Friday.

Seems like a good decision if it has to do with his neck.

Yeah, gambling with concussions is bad enough. Gambling with a neck injury is downright lunacy.

Players are starting to get smarter about their long-term health.  I hate to see him retire but respect his decision to put safety over money.

Neck injuries are no joke. I had an anterior cervical discectomy of my C6-C7 vertebre. The doc asked if I was in a serious car accident, which I wasn't. The only thing I can attribute it to would be the severe run ins with fences when I played baseball/softball for alot of years.

Or that big-ass frog on your head putting too much pressure on your neck?

shrug

Edit - sorry for joking about a serious medical issue.  If it makes it any better, I actually broke off a bone in my neck/spinal column in a skiing accident.

Was there a big-ass frog on your head when you did it? So, yeah, probably not the same thing Russ. ;)

Smart move on the players part. He certainly did not make enough to be set, but he is well ahead of most. Tough break for Orr, seemed he found something finally to only have it snatched away. Tough break. Better to walk away than be wheeled away.

I wonder if this is going to be the norm for young LBs coming to the NFL.....Almost makes it hard to draft them if they are going to retire after a season or two........

I still think this is the exception rather than the rule, but definitely something we need to consider when drafting young LBs.

Just goes to show that you can never have too many LBs.

Sounds like he really had no choice:

Things quickly changed last Friday. In a surprising development, at only 24 years old, Orr announced his retirement after a breakout season which was expected to result in a meaningful contract extension prior to the 2017 season. Reports suggest he was working towards an agreement with the Ravens in which Orr would earn more than $2 million in 2017 alone.

Late in the season, Orr was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury he suffered against the Steelers in week 16. After an initial MRI identified a herniated disk in his neck, a subsequent CT scan revealed a rare spine and neck condition. Orr was born with it, but the condition was never identified. The biggest implication is it could lead to paralysis if he were hit the wrong way. With the significant risk, the decision appears to have been easy, though Orr’s hands may have been tied.

While some reports suggest the Ravens tried to talk Orr out of the retirement decision, in reality, it doesn’t appear he had a choice. It’s also unclear whether the claim regarding the Ravens attempt is true. In an interview following the announcement, Orr explained doctors told him he’s unlikely to ever pass an NFL physical again. He also explicitly stated no one tried to talk him out of it. For him, the decision was clear-cut – to play through the condition and accept the massive risk was not an option.

The scary part of all this was that he was born with the rare spine and neck condition and didn't know about it.  Imagine all the hits he has taken since he started playing football and possibly that one wrong hit could have been a life disaster.

At 24, it's gotta be a big blow to realize you will no longer be doing what you've pretty much done all your life.  Even though football is out of the question, at least he still has his health in tact and his whole life ahead of him.

Well, that didn't last long. Orr is considering coming out of retirement.

I'm hopeful that he can come back and be healthy but I keep thinking back to guys with head/spine injuries and not many have been able to come back.  The only one that I can think of that came back and was successful was Peyton.  But he was an an all-world talent beforehand and did take off a full year and, even with that, he still wasn't the same guy.  And he didn't take the hits that an inside backer will take.

I will stick with my initial thought that gambling with neck injuries is downright lunacy. Of course I just picked him up, so now I have a rooting interest in him coming back, but I will reiterate what I said in the other thread. I feel a little dirty rooting for him to come back and think it is probably in his best interest to remain retired.

Well put, it's definitely a sticky situation. Word is he has gotten some better news from doctors lately, however. Guess you have to leave his safety to the professionals

These players can always find a "second opinion" that is more encouraging...this part bothers me as to his integrity:
"There's another twist to Orr's story: If he chooses to play again, he can sign with any team immediately as an unrestricted free agent. If he hadn't retired, he would've been a restricted free agent this offseason. Orr didn't file retirement papers in January and the Ravens didn't place him on their reserve/retired list because no one expected him to play again. The period to extend tenders to restricted free agents has passed without the Ravens tendering Orr -- a move the Ravens didn't consider because they assumed he would stay retired. Orr informed Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome on Tuesday he would like to continue playing football."

That side of the story is getting some play here in Baltimore, but as the guys on the local sports talk radio said yesterday, it was the Ravens doctor who told him he should never play football again. The Ravens weren't going to keep him on their roster if they didn't think he should ever play football again. I'm still not 100% sure he should come back, but the free agency thing has nothing to do with his integrity. All reports are he sincerely thought he would never play again because that is what the Ravens doctor told him.

Appreciate the first hand reporting from Baltimore.....I'm in a "conspiracy theory mode" right now!  thinking

More info coming out: "Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Zach Orr retired back in January, saying that he'd spoken to "multiple doctors and spine specialists." Orr now claims that he did not initially seek out multiple opinions, but rather it was getting multiple opinions that convinced him to return to football."

update..."As Zach Orr continues his tour around the NFL, questions still surround the free agent linebacker’s health. Though his visit with the Detroit Lions seemed to have gone perfectly according to his agent, other NFL teams aren’t so sure.

After leaving Detroit, Zach Orr traveled to Indianapolis to visit with the Colts. According to Stephen Holder of the Indy Star, the medical examination for Orr wasn’t nearly as promising. “Thus far, the Colts have not reached a comfort level with Orr that would pave the way to his signing with the team,” Holder wrote."

His agent says 16 tms are interested...sooner or later he'll get signed, but he may find, IMO, that it could be not the most desirable team, given how he processed his medical situation, changing his storyline
