PostSubject: Going for it vs Riding it out   Tue Nov 22, 2016 10:38 am

Was having this conversation with a buddy this morning. The topic was "If you have a playoff team in a dynasty league, and you can make a move to propel you and give you a better shot to win this year, would you do that while giving up picks that can help you in the future?"

My side is that I go for it when I can. I do what I can do make sure I have the best chance to win it that year because you don't know what will happen the following year and picks are somewhat of a gamble so if you can get a guy that you like that is proven that will step your team up that extra notch, do it.

Now of course the topic will become, "How much you give dictates that". Of course, but what you feel is fair is the answer I guess. What is your viewpoint on the subject? I am sure there are people on both sides of the fence on this, some that want it now and some that build for the future and continue with the good team they have. Healthy debate, no?

Too many variables. Do I have a good team or is it just ok. How much of an improvement is it from what I've got. My answer would change from one scenario to another.

Yeah for sure. Well what if you think that you have a shot to win it all?

I absolutely would risk going for it all. Screw those variables ;)

If you think you have a shot, I say go for it and mortgage the future if necessary. Not all playoff teams are created equal though. I am 6-5 in one league, one spot out of the playoffs, with an awful team that just got schedule lucky. I may actually sneak into the playoffs, but no way am I moving any of my 4 2017 firsts to try to make a run this year unless the deal was absolutely lopsided in my favor.

If you mortgage and miss and then bail on the team/league then you have to live with fact you're a douche. I'm open to trading but seems all the teams are staying put trying to win something or other.

It all depends on the age of my team and their window to win it all.  I'm actually going through a real-life analysis with this right now across my various leagues.

If I have a team that is built around a core of guys like Luck, Cam, Gurley, Zeke, Evans, Cooper, etc., then I'm less likely to buy a piece unless I have a gaping hole somewhere.  Because I plan on contending for several years.

But if my core is guys like Brady, Forte, Smith, or even possibly guys like DT or Dez, I'll gladly trade away all picks to get some extra pieces.  Because I know that I've got one or two years to win it all.  And then I can go into rebuild mode if I want.

I have a team that is locked into the playoffs, in one of my leagues, and I have no desire to improve the team to make a deep playoff run. Mainly because, even if I do make a big splash trade, I still don't feel my team is all that good.

So I'm right there with Shawn. He pretty much summed it up just right

Yep - balancing act for me. Nothing worse than going all in, coming up short and screwing yourself for the future.

When looking at adding guys it does help to figure out how much of a difference a single player makes.  How often are games close enough that an upgrade at one position will help you.  And how often does that particular player actually provide you with those extra points.  You may find out that you're giving up a 1st but only increasing your odds of winning by 5%.  In that case you may get a better return by just gambling on this year and using the pick.

I generally wouldn't go for it unless most of my team was going to be lost the following year. However, if it is pure dyno, then I value the experience of the draft too much to give that up.

Well I have an uphill battle this week. Maybe if Sty takes it easy on me Sunday I won't lose. He's just ruining his draft pick. Bench your guys Sty!

All I want is to beat you. And I would actually be improving my draft picks as most of them that I own are not my own but your picks.

Honestly beating you would be enough reward in itself. Not overly concerned with what it does to draft picks.

Pushin' some (significant) chips into the pot. Not really an "all-in" move as I did not have a lot of Tagables (1 yr deals) this year, so adding a few fit with the ability to make the move and pull the trigger.

poker

Usually riding it out. If my team was that good, no need to complicate my lineup decisions. If my team squeaked in then it's not likely a trade would help.
