How did they not have a thread yet?!

Looks like Old Man Smith will be around for another three years at least!

Quote :
The Carolina Panthers
and wide receiver Steve Smith have agreed to terms on three-year
extension with a club option for a fourth year, according to a team
source.
The Panthers have a called a news conference for later Tuesday.
Smith
is coming off a resurgent 2011 season in which he caught 79 passes for
1,394 yards and seven touchdowns, helping quarterback Cam Newton
immensely in his rookie year.
Smith, who turns 33 in May, has spent all 11 seasons with the Panthers.

Except this is not MLB...
Odds he makes it through the contract without getting cut - 50/50?

Recap from Bleacher Report

Quote :
Draft Picks

Round 1: LB Luke Kuechly (Boston College)

Round 2: OG Amini Silatolu (Midwestern State)

Round 3: None

Round 4: DE Frank Alexander (Oklahoma), WR Joe Adams (Arkansas)

Round 5: CB Josh Norman (Coastal Carolina)

Round 6: P Brad Nortman (Wisconsin)

Round 7: S D.J. Campbell (California)

Grade: B-

Summary

While I'm not a big fan of Luke Kuechly in the first round over a defensive tackle, the pick is easy to explain. He can play any position at linebacker and will make injuries to Jon Beason and Thomas Davis in 2011 easier to come back from.

Silatolu is a sleeper at guard, and someone I had pegged as a late first-rounder. He's a great pickup there for the Panthers to protect Cam Newton.

Frank Alexander is a bit of a reach, and the team still hasn't addressed their need for a defensive tackle. Joe Adams and Josh Norman were good sleeper picks who could contribute on third down right away.

I really liked this draft even if Joe Adams muddies the WR picture in Carolina. I scooped up Gettis and LaFell in a few leagues thinking it would be one of them but now I don't know.

Adams is pretty raw but it is muddied.
I think they could have found a better impact player for their D in round 1 tho

LaFell is in line to be the Panthers' starting wide receiver opposite Steve Smith, the Charlotte Observer reports. Analysis: LaFell was a decent wideout for the Panthers last season mostly playing as the No. 3 guy behind Smith and Legedu Naanee, who is no longer with the team. David Gettis is returning from a torn ACL and will likely line up as the No. 3 receiver this year, leaving LaFell on the field for most plays.

I scooped up LaFell and Gettis in every league I could last month. I think they both have fantastic sleeper potential.

I expect a decline in his rushing numbers and rushing TD's and a nice uptick in his passing game.

Panthers MLB Jon Beason (Achilles' surgery) has been medically cleared to participate in team drills during training camp. Analysis: "I feel ready to play four quarters of football if I had to," he said. Beason was limited to individual drills at OTAs, but only as a precaution. His recovery appears to have progressed setback free. Beason is staying at middle linebacker this season, with first-round pick Luke Kuechly working on the weak side.

Great news for Carolina. They were a mess on D last year.

Panthers DE Greg Hardy has gained roughly 20 pounds of muscle entering his third NFL season.

Analysis: Hardy is pushing 300 pounds and 14 percent body fat after playing last season at 280. He faded badly down the stretch last season after impressing early on with QB hurries and batting passes. Although three bills is rather large for the edge in a 4-3 scheme, GM Marty Hurney is content that the gain is "good weight."

Wow Hardy is a sleeper pick... He is going to be mostly left alone with Johnson getting a lot of the attention. Damn 20 pounds of muscle, wish I could do that in a few months

Panthers acquired WR Louis Murphy from the Raiders.

The Raiders' compensation is likely a late-round pick. The trade comes three weeks after the Contra Costa Times reported Murphy was in a "fight" for his roster spot, and greatly increases undrafted rookie Rod Streater's chances of cracking Oakland's 53-man roster. The move could be interpreted as a lack of faith from Carolina in Brandon LaFell and David Gettis, but the reality is Murphy is little more than a depth acquisition for one of the league's thinner receiver corps. He'll have an inside track on a roster spot, but will have to stay healthy, something that has proven challenging for him his first three years in the league.

Good pickup here for Carolina, as their 2nd and 3rd WR's were very iffy. I wouldn't be surprised if Murphy gets the nod for WR2 on that team. The guy has talent just needs to stay on the field. Good trade for both teams imo

This kind of went under the radar but last week after the game, Cam came out and threw his team under the bus hardcore. He said that changes needed to be made, either himself, the coordinator, or the coach. Yea... It's their fault opposing defenses finally figured out how to stop your college style offense?

I just love the lazy reporting...."could be", "could be" and "could be".....

I can't believe they left out this option....

The Panthers "could consider" picking up the Incredible Hulk because if they paired him with the guy who does the Superman move they could have a real Superpower of a team in 2015!!!

In other news, the Panthers headquarters "could be" hit by a meteor in the next 12 hours which would kill the entire team.  Right now, there is an elite team trying to drill into the meteor so they can place explosives inside and detonate it which "could" change the trajectory of the meteor anywhere from missing the earth entirely to hitting a nearby elementary school.  Unfortunately the drill just jammed up...at this time all I can say for sure is that Bruce Willis and the Affleck duck named Ben seem to be arguing over who is going to sacrifice themself in order for you to see this teams offense sputter again in 2015.  More news to come....

Would like to see Payton ride off into the sunset, but if not, seeing Cam win one is a very nice consolation. This is the first SB in a long time where I did not have a clear favorite that I wanted to win.

I think this Carolina team is going to be the favorites, right? How could they not be, they are such a good team. I don't know if its all coaching, or whatever, but its not like they are stacked with all these studs, they certainly have a few, but they are one of those teams that when you add them all up the sum is greater than all the individual parts... they just all believe in each other and play so well as a team, I think that is pretty impressive. As others have mentioned, in the preseason (after losing Benjamin) nobody was picking this team to do anything this year... and now they are heading to the Super Bowl at 17-1...

The Broncos offense is so boring to watch.

Both D's are great - probably the best 2 in the league this year - but I'd much rather watch the Panthers offense. I really hope they win. Cam is good for the game.

I agree. The Broncos being in the Bowl actually annoys me...their defense is really good but they weren't exciting and that offense doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the damn game. I like Peyton winning because I think too many people talk shit about him so that's my consolation.

Go Panthers!

I can watch this superbowl since it doesn't have a NE or Seahawks team involved. If either of those teams would have made it, I wouldn't be watching. At least I can watch this year. Being big Auburn fan, I hope the Panthers win and I'm sure they will. It will be a much closer game then the Arizona game but I still think they win by 10pts or more.....

Panthers fired GM Dave Gettleman.
To call this move shocking would be an understatement. The Panthers did suffer through a disappointing 6-10 season in 2016, but they had been to the playoffs in Gettleman's other three years in charge including a Super Bowl berth in 2015. Gettleman is also a respected talent evaluator who drafted well during his time in Carolina. All of that suggests something behind the scenes prompted this move. It is worth noting star TE Greg Olsen has thrown around the idea of a holdout, LB Thomas Davis is entering his contract year, and Gettleman did not handle the departures of either Steve Smith or Josh Norman particularly well, a fact NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports bothered owner Jerry Richardson. Brandon Beane, who likely would have been the top in-house replacement, accepted the Bills' GM job in May.

Unexpected.
