The wife and I drove by the Capitol tonight and the news trucks were there.  Across the street was an Oakland Raiders semi & trailer parked in a dirt lot.  Gotta see if I can get out there tomorrow and snap a pic.  Here is the copy of the proclamation:

Wow, was just talking about this with my buddies yesterday. Thanks for the inside scoop man.

The special session started today.  Rick Velotta is the reporter for Vegas Gaming & Tourism and his Twitter account has been very busy.  I've been using him to follow the proceedings.

The 2 days of discussions about the hotel tax to fund a new stadium has come to an end.  The Nevada Senate voted tonight and the tax needs 2/3's majority to pass.  The NV Senate voted 16-5 to approve the bill (76%).  Now onto the Nevada State Assembly for the similar vote.  Needs 2/3's there too for final passage.  Doesn't look like they'll be voting tonight.  At least from what I'm hearing right now.  Maybe voting tomorrow?

Nevada lawmakers approve $750M stadium deal
Quote :
Nevada lawmakers approved a hotel tax increase which will provide $750 million in public funding towards a new NFL stadium in Las Vegas.
This deal does not ensure the Raiders will be moving to Las Vegas, but it removes a major obstacle to the relocation. "All parties have worked extremely hard to develop and approve this tremendous stadium project that will serve as a proud new home for the entire Raider Nation," owner Mark Davis said. Davis still needs approval from three-fourths of the owners to relocate, but he seems to have quite a bit of support in league circles. It is likely the Raiders will be the Las Vegas Raiders in the near future.

I've been watching this unfold the last few day in the legislature and it's obvious the Special Session was called by the governor because it was probably a foregone conclusion that this would pass. However, the assembly vote didn't happen as soon as expected as the rumor was they only had about 26 or 27 of the 28 votes needed for 2/3's majority. They debated until after 1am on Thursday night and came back 9am on Friday morning. It finally passed sometime Friday morning. I can't imagine the back-scratching and back-door promises that were made. I think public opinion was more against it than they were for it. But then again, I think this was all more of a formality than anything else.

From Mark Davis's statement, he almost makes it sound like a sure thing that the Raiders will move once the stadium is completed:

Mark Davis wrote:
"I would like to thank Governor Sandoval, the Southern Nevada Tourism Infrastructure Committee, and the members of the Nevada Legislature on this historic day, " said Raiders owner Mark Davis. "All parties have worked extremely hard to develop and approve this tremendous stadium project that will serve as a proud new home for the entire Raider Nation."

If the Raiders continue to win, and make some post season noise...look for the City of Oakland to get involved again. With four NFL teams in California, surely they can let one go? vote yes

I can guarantee you that every visiting team's fan base will look at the schedule and if there's one road game that they can take a road trip on, it'll be to Vegas.

Same with conventions. That's the excuse they use to go to Vegas. "We have to attend the convention." lol3

Yeah, we do trips every year and have seen nearly all of our "must see" locations. Vegas will be near the top when it happens.

Our son lives in Vegas and I already know when we plan our visits, I would be looking at the Raiders home schedule and I will be looking at next year's Vegas NHL schedule too. "Hey son, we're dying to come down and see you." wink

This will be a big hurdle...especially if the City of Oakland wants back in the mix.

Quote :
The Washington Post reports it's uncertain if the league would approve the Raiders' move to Las Vegas if/when the team formally applies for relocation.
Per reporter Mark Maske, owners' concerns have more to do with Vegas' modest size than status as a gambling mecca. Las Vegas is just the 29th largest metropolitan area in the United States, sandwiching itself between Cincinnati and Kansas City. Oakland is 11th, and St. Louis is 20th. "Most of us would prefer they stay in Oakland," a high-ranking official said. "If that’s not possible and we get to January and the Las Vegas deal is all there is, we’ll have to consider it." Owner Mark Davis seems hellbent on a desert move, but it's far from a certainty.

If the league approves the Raiders' move to Las Vegas, the team would hope to relocate in time for the 2020 season.
The Raiders are expected to file paperwork for their move in the coming days, setting the stage for a vote this spring. 24 of the league's 32 owners would have to approve the move. If it passes, the Raiders would move ahead on their plans to build a $1.9 billion stadium in Las Vegas. Of that $1.9 billion, the Raiders would contribute $500 million with the rest coming from casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and Clark County hotel tax revenue. The Raiders would be the first NFL franchise and only the second franchise in the four major sports to play in Las Vegas.

When the Raiders lease ends in Vegas (10 yrs, 15 yrs, 20 yrs what have you) they'll be packing up the moving van again with the San Antonio destination marker affixed to the front windshield.

I don't see Vegas as a long term answer to housing pro sports team(s).

The NHL dropped a expansion franchise in Vegas that kicks off this year and it too will not end well. I don't think the fan base will hold up over the long run, and comping tickets from Casinos will only go so far.

I would imagine that almost all the season tickets would be purchased by casinos/businesses and they wouldn't really care if the Raiders were winning or not. Now merchandise sales and building up a local fan base may very well become an issue.

Hey Bill...Yeah, the "bulk buy" involving the Casinos may make it a bit more difficult for the casual fan; but, the merchandising has never been a problem for the Raiders. Oaktown, La La Land, Vegas, or whatever...they are the "Bad Boys" and for better or worse, that sells.

I remember reading someplace that ticket sales are a SUPER TINY part of an owners revenue stream.. its' why the Jax owner doesn't care that the entire top level is roped off sometimes at home games.

Their money comes from media contracts, not ticket sales.

Which of course leads a reasonable person to ask .. well, then why are they so effing expensive and why do teams require a PSL. jerks.

Yeah I have heard that too. But man, think about it. I am not quite sure what an average ticket costs in places like JVille, but here in GB the face value of tickets is an average of $122 per seat. So if you are missing 10,000 seats, that is $1.22 Million per game. 10 Games per season, and you are looking at over $12 million in revenue, not counting all the money for parking, drinks and food that you are not getting from those 10,000 people which is probably another $3-5 million.

But you also have to factor the visiting team cut of the gate, which is something like 40%.  I  think that the teams do get to keep all of their concessions/parking/etc., provided their lease allows it rather than giving it to the city.

Slight hiccup with the Raiders moving to Vegas as the casino mogul Adelson takes his $650,000,000 worth of toys and goes home. Raiders don't seem too worried as they plan to move forward. Word they would fund that themselves, or get another investor. Possibly Goldman Sachs? It seems like Mark Davis has already made up his mind, regardless of obstacles. We'll see.

San Antonio has an empty Alomo Dome as a temp facility and is willing to build a new stadium last I heard. They are a bigger more populated city than you would expect. Easy top 10 in terms of possible people. Larger than either Vegas or San Diego. They already have the Spurs who wear Silver and Black, I'm telling you, man ... book it. San Antonio Raiders, it's destined to happen. San Diego will kick tires, but will not pony up a new venue.

This is looking to be more than a "hiccup"...

ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reports Goldman Sachs is "re-evaluating" the proposed stadium deal in Las Vegas.
Casino magnate Sheldon Adelson withdrew his financial backing Monday after the Raiders proposed a lease agreement without consulting him, but the Raiders reportedly made backup plans with Goldman Sachs. Those backup plans look to be teetering on the edge, however, which could scuttle the deal. These concerns could push back the relocation vote, which was expected to happen during the league meetings in March.

I agree.  It almost looks like they connected themselves with Adelson because he's the big casino mogul in Vegas and that got them some instant local backing which would then appeal to the Nevada lawmakers.  Once they got the Nevada vote from the legislature that they needed, they were done with him and then had their backup plan of Goldman Sachs.  But now it's like, oops, as that plan may be in jeopardy too.  I may have gotten suckered in with all the early hoopla. pretty colors

I hope the leave and take their asshole fans with them. Man I hate that team.

But in all seriousness, I think Vegas is a great place for a team. Then I would have an excuse to go there and see a Chargers game.
