This is something that should have happened to the Patriots as well. 1 year is a lot but at the same time you have to send a message to the league.

This right where I felt it should be. Way to lay down the law Roger!

They already had a plan for a 4 game suspension which proves it wasn't that big of a deal. Now what fuckers? haha

They will survive and hopefully be able to do more than just compete. I think they will suprise people and still win the division. What I'm dreading is the suspensions for the players still on the roster. With the 10 million they will save in staff salaries maybe they can kick some of that over to Brees and get him signed so that he can start the healing process and help with leadership in this time of need. I knew there would be some suspensions of Peyton and Loomis but not this severe.

Thanks Mike, I caught that tonight on the news as well. If it is indeed Shockey that is mighty sad IMO I use to like him.
Nothing worse than a rat faced fink in my books. Not sure what he reasoning would be to tattle out on his old running mates. Hope the old "what goes around, comes around" happens here.

Thanks for the post Mike .... cheers

Not the Q whether it is accepted or not.

The Q is why strip them of a SB from 2 or 3 years ago?
Are we gonna strip all other SB teams from the 70's and 80's and even 90's if we get some dirt on them?
How much blood is enough? The coach gest a 1yr suspension to the tune of 7M plus.
The GM get 8 games, the assistant coach get 6 games, and the DC gets indefinite.
Fines totalling 1M and two lost 2nd round picks to the franchise.

That is not enough for some? Really?
Wow!

It's enough. I wasn't taking the stripping of the SB seriously. I was only taking the stance that just because shit goes on doesn't mean its right. Also, its my opinion that most cases of this are a players to players type of thing which is harder to police but the fact that coaches were involved here is why they are getting exactly what they should be. Add in they blatantly lied to the league about it and got caught.

Depending on the players suspended and how long it might actually help the Saints.

Players suspended by the league don't count against the cap or use up a roster space. So suspensions for overpriced players (I'm looking at you Vilma) can actually benefit the Saints. According to Spotrac his 2012 cap number is $6.6M so the Saints could get all of that back on their cap if he's out for the year.

I can't figure out how to get a direct link for the details on suspended players not counting against the cap. But if you google "NFL General Counsel Adolpho Birch on the NFL's Drug Policy" it will link to pdf on Vanderbilt Law. Search the pdf for "salary cap" and on page 7 you'll see this:
Quote :

JELP: What effect does a player’s suspension have on
the team’s roster and their salary cap figures?
BIRCH: When a player is suspended, he is essentially
completely removed from the team. He can’t go to
the facilities. He can’t watch film. He can’t talk to the
coaches. He can’t do anything. Most importantly from
his perspective, he does not get paid. For example, if it
is a one-week suspension, then he is barred from the
facility for that week and does not receive a paycheck
for that week’s game. (NFL Players are paid by the
game based on a 16-game schedule.) Because of that,
clubs are not penalized from a salary cap standpoint
when a player is suspended. That player’s salary cap
number attributable to the period of his suspension
drops off the team’s cap count. He goes into another
category so that the club can fill his roster spot with
another player. The point is not to make the team go
short-handed. It is to remove that particular player
from play.

The thing that needs to be kept in mind is that this punishment is not just for having a bounty system.

1. It was a bounty system endorsed and RAN by COACHES. Player bounties is one thing, having it ran by the team is another.

2. The Saints were warned about this two years ago and told to stop. They told the NFL they would. They lied.

3. During the investigation, they blatantly lied. After it came out, they lied. Payton said he never knew anything about it, and the NFL has an e-mail from an assistant saying something like "Vilma had me put him down for $5,000 on Rodgers," or something like that.

If the Saints had stopped when the NFL told them to and/or had not lied about it later on after they got caught, I really think the punishment would have been much less severe.

Did some more research in addition to the link I posted above. Assuming players are put on the Reserved Suspended list I'm pretty sure roster spot frees up.

I can't find a link from a more official site but I'm pretty sure I remember this is how it worked with Holmes and Roethlisberger.

I wasn't being totally serious either, but from what I understand, this whole bounty system was operating when they won the Superbowl. That's all I'm saying. It happened to USC when they broke the rules....the 2005 Orange bowl is the only BCS National Championship ever vacated by the winning team.

Different league, different rules being broke. I don't think a bounty system is call for taking past results away. Playing an illegal player who is not eligible I can at least see some logic there. Otherwise teams could bring in the whole "ringer" strategy.

Yahoo Sports' Michael Silver has obtained audio of Saints defensive

injure 49ers offensive players during the clubs' 2011 playoff game.
The audio was captured by filmmaker Sean Pamphilon, who was doing a

ALS. Gleason was on the sideline during the game. Williams speaks of
dealing 49ers QB Alex Smith a "remember me" shot, re-injuring 49ers PR
Kyle Williams, and hitting 49ers RB Frank Gore in the head during
pileups. Williams wanted WR Michael Crabtree to suffer a debilitating
injury. "We need to decide whether Crabtree wants to be a fake-### prima

that out, and he becomes human when you [expletive] take out that

Given that the guy that leaked the audio was in the room under the pretense of recording something for Gleason's family only I suspect the fallout of this will include less access to NFL locker rooms...

Suspension upheld and rightfully so.

Quote :
The league announced the decision Monday, four days after NFL
Commissioner Roger Goodell spent roughly six hours speaking with Sean
Payton (suspended for the 2012 season), Mickey Loomis (eight-game
suspension) and Joe Vitt (six-game suspension), who hoped to reduce
suspensions handed down from the league.

The New Orleans were notified Monday that after careful consideration
of their appeals, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has upheld the
discipline that was imposed for continuing violations of the league's
anti-bounty rule that endangered player safety over a three-year period.
Payton's
season-long suspension wihtout pay for the 2012 NFL season will begin
on April 16. Suspensions for Loomis and Vitt begin with the start of the
2012 regular season.
Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has not appealed his indefinite suspension.
The
team and the individuals will be expected to cooperate in any further
proceedings and to assist in the development and implementation of
programs to instruct players and coaches at all levels on principles of
player safety, fair play, and sportsmanship.
Goodell said he
would consider mitigatig their financial penalties if they embrace the
opportunity and participate in a constructive way. In the case of the
team, the commissioner would consider whether there are factors that
would support modifying the forfeiture of the team's 2013 second-round
draft choice.
At the conclusion of their suspensions, the
commissioner will review the status of each of the three individuals to
determine their eligibility for reinstatement.
Payton twice
apologized for his role in the bounty program, saying he takes "full
responsibility" for a system that operated for three years under his
watch.
Beyond the punishment for Saints coaches and executives,
the NFL still has to determine if players who were involved in the
bounty program also will be disciplined. The NFL has said as many as 27
players could be sanctioned for their role in the scandal.

Looks like he left the door open to get out of the fines/loss of draft picks though.

Parcells wants no part of this mess.

Quote :
Bill Parcells has informed the New Orleans Saints the he will not replace suspended coach Sean Payton and is staying retired, according to a league source.
The Saints will now look to hire within the organization. By promoting
an assistant on the team, the Saints will not have to interview a
minority candidate in accordance with the league's Rooney Rule. Assistant
head coach Joe Vitt, who has been suspended for the first six games of
the upcomnig season, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo are among
the interal candidates who could fill in for Payton.

I didn't realize they host the Super Bowl this year...I think they should have kept their draft picks and had that hosting yanked instead. Well, maybe not since that screws businesses and what have you and that isn't right.

I think they have prepared for loosing Vilma for the year with the signings. I just wonder who else will be suspended, for how long, and when will it be announced. I never did understand why the guy who institues the punishement gets to hear the appeals and decide whether or not to reduce it. It will be an interesting year and I still think they will do better than most. Now they just need to get Brees signed.

I think you guys are crazy. Regardless of the bounty scandal, the Saints are making some great moves on defense. Brodrick Bunkley was solid for the Broncos last season. Curtis Lofton and David Hawthorne are great pickups too. I don't see any glaring needs on this team. I think they will be a contender this year more so then the last two seasons.

I think Brees will be in camp within the next 2 weeks with either a new contract or signing the franchise tag. He knows how important he is to the team and even more so now that Payton will be gone for the year. I want to know what the player suspensions are going to be. I still think they can win the division by going 11-5 or 12-4.
