Three and out: Chiefs QB job up for grabs

Chiefs want competition for Cassel: Recently, Chiefs QB Matt Cassel helped save a woman from a fire. Now he may need to save his own job. Chiefs GM Scott Pioli says that the team plans to bring in another quarterback to push Cassel for the starting gig. Kansas City currently has two QBs under contract (Cassel and Ricky Stanzi) and who the third signal-caller would be is still up in the air. However, free agent Kyle Orton, who finished the season as the Chiefs quarterback could be a possibility. Combine this with the uncertainty surrounding Jamaal Charles‘ after major knee surgery and the entirety of Kansas City’s offense is a fantasy enigma. Stay tuned, it may be awhile before we completely clear this up.

Maybe they can entice the Colts to give up #1 with half of their roster........

The Chiefs should already consider themselves winners in 2012 since they will be less one Todd Haley.

If Manning is cleared medically, I can really see the Chiefs making a BIG play for his services. They have the cash to do it.

I think the Chiefs will shock some people with how well they do this year if/when all of their talent comes back from IR. They are in the worst division in football so those 6 wins should be easy.

Draft recap from Bleacher Report:

Quote :
Draft Picks:

Round 1: DT Dontari Poe (Memphis)

Round 2: OG Jeff Allen (Illinois)

Round 3: OT Donald Stephenson (Oklahoma)

Round 4: WR Devon Wylie (Fresno State)

Round 5: CB De'Quan Menzie (Alabama)

Round 6: RB Cyrus Gray (Texas A&M)

Round 7: DT Jerome Long (San Diego State), WR Junior Hemingway (Michigan)

Grade: B

Summary:

Dontari Poe may prove to be a reach at No. 11 overall, but he's filling a need and will round out the Kansas City defensive line. It's a pick you could argue for based on his athletic potential.

The picks outside of Round One were all very good. Allen and Stephenson will push for playing time on the offensive line, and at least Allen will be a starter soon.

Wylie and Menzie were two of my favorite slot players in the class, with Menzie my top rated slot cornerback. The Day Three selections were all very solid in Kansas City.

Another draft I really don't have an opinion on. Wasn't really shaken up with any of the picks except Poe being early.

Interesting story.

Quote :
Chiefs signed Monmouth QB Alex Tanney. Analysis: Tanney generated buzz with a trick shot YouTube video, but was also prolific as a four-year starter. He owns the Division III record for passing yards, and NCAA record with 157 career touchdown passes. Tanney will need the Chiefs to sour on Brady Quinn or Ricky Stanzi to have any shot at a roster spot, however.

For those of you who haven't seen it:

I found this amusing:

Quote :
Color Man: "Both QBs for the Chiefs have gone down, and in trots Alex Tanney from little Monmouth College in NJ, for his first NFL action".

Tanney: Guys, they just called in a hand off to Hillis, but I think that is bush league.

Huddle: (Stunned silence)

Tanney: Here's what we are going to do. Tony, I want you to go 7 yards out and just stop on a dime...whatever you do, don't turn around. Steve, I want you about 4.5 feet from Tony, and when the ball comes to you, brush your arms towards Dwayne.

Breaston: Huh?

Tanney: Work with this...don't ask questions, I got it covered. Dwayne, I want you to count to three once the ball is snapped, then run to Steve's left, down the sideline as fast as you can and get the ball.

Bowe: I thought the pass was going to Tony?

Tanney: Jeez! don't you guys get what I am doing here?!?!

Huddle: (Collective "no").

Tanney: Do I have to spell it out for you!!! I am going to take the snap, laser it off of Mokaei's dome, Steve will be there for the rebound, and swipe it to Dwayne going full speed down the field. This is not rocket science, guys. I have a lot more complicated crap for the second play, so this is just a warmup.

According to the Kansas City Star, the Chiefs ideally want Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis to touch the ball 500 times this season. Analysis: It confirms that the Chiefs plan on rolling with a run-heavy attack under defensive-minded head coach Romeo Crennel and new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. As long as Charles bounces back well from his ACL tear, 240 carries and 30 catches is the floor. There's still room for Hillis to chip in with another 9-11 touches per game. The health of Charles' knee will be one of training camp's major storylines.

I'm surprised to hear so many teams are going to try to focus on the run after last year's pass-fest. I suppose when your QB isn't exactly a rock-star...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Romeo Crennel is no longer defensive coordinator, as the embattled coach will instead focus entirely on being head coach, the Kansas City Chiefs announced on Monday.

The Chiefs also announced that defensive back Stanford Routt has been released. Routt, a free agent who joined the Chiefs in the off-season after being cut by the Oakland Raiders, has struggled this year after taking the place of departed defensive back Brandon Carr.

Javier Arenas will start in the place of Routt. The team also signed DT Shaun Smith, who played for the team in 2010.

The Chiefs (1-7) are off to a historically bad start after being picked by many to contend for the AFC West title. The team has yet to lead in regulation in any game this season, and are coming off a dispiriting 31-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers. The next play the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road on Monday, November 12.

Linebackers coach Gary Gibbs will replace Crennel as defensive coordinator.

At this point they should just tank for Barkley.

What a bunch of jackasses. Act like you have been there before even if you never have....

I am very happy they lost per my bets but did you see all the celebratory penalties these idiots racked up? Hell they incurred a penalty for celebrating a play that didn't even count. What do you have to celebrate losers? Your team is shit. Your coach is shit. Your QB is shit.

Yet the celebrated everything yesterday...good plays, bad plays, plays that didn't count...and they were talkin shit too....

You just lost in OT to the Steelers who are were down Mendenhall, Roethlisberger, Brown, Polamalu and probably other guys I am overlooking....so you know what?

STOP CELEBRATING.......YOU SUCK!

Report: Chiefs player commits suicide at Arrowhead after killing girlfriend
Posted by Mike Florio on December 1, 2012, 10:40 AM EST

The shooting at Arrowhead Stadium reportedly has resulted in one death at the team facility, and one death elsewhere.

According to KCTV, an unnamed player has committed suicide at Arrowhead Stadium. He shot himself at the practice facility after allegedly shooting and killing his girlfriend at a home near 54th Street and Chrysler Avenue.

Per Jay Glazer of FOX, Chiefs players are being asked to assemble at the team facility for a meeting regarding the situation.

More details to come.

Crazy stuff. Hearing it was Jovan Belcher, a LB.

From what I hear his girlfriend got home late from a concert, 1 AM. They were fighting, he ends up shooting her multiple times in front of his mother.

Leaves and ends up at the KCC training facility. Coaching staff met him in the parking lot with cops arriving. He thanked them before killing himself in his car.

Crazy story.

Yeah, I love this move for the Chiefs.

Big issue I am predicting right now.

We will see another Vick controversy.

They will draft Geno Smith, but will have a year to develop him. Which he will need.

Chiefs acquired QB Alex Smith from the 49ers in exchange for a second-round draft pick in 2013 and a conditional pick in the 2014 draft.

Analysis: Four years after trading for the Patriots' backup quarterback, the Chiefs have swung a deal for the 49ers' clipboard holder. The price tag is shocking. The Niners received the 34th pick this year plus a 2014 conditional pick that can escalate to an additional second-rounder, for a career game manager. It's similar to what the Cardinals paid for Kevin Kolb in 2011 and Kansas City paid for Matt Cassel in 2009. Smith is an upgrade on Cassel, but his mediocre skill set prevents offenses from playing explosive football and threatening downfield. The deal is done, but won't be "official" until the new league year opens on March 12. The 49ers are now armed with five draft picks in the top 93. The Chiefs are slated to pick just twice in the top 95. In Andy Reid's pass-happy West Coast scheme, Expect plenty of Smith checkdowns to Jamaal Charles.

ROTFLMAO

Nobody would buy. There's no reason to trade up to the 1.01. Even in the BEST guys have 2-3 right behind them as far as talent. Deep draft!

The 49ers won’t only acquire the Chiefs’ 2013 second-round pick in the planned trade for quarterback Alex Smith. San Francisco is also set to get a valuable pick next year.

A league source tells PFT’s Mike Florio that the 2014 conditional pick in the trade is the Chiefs’ 2014 third-rounder, which can become a second-rounder if certain benchmarks are met.

Chiefs assigned the franchise tag to LT Branden Albert. Analysis: Instead of letting blue-chip players Albert and Dwayne Bowe walk, the rebuilding Chiefs got aggressive and kept both with 11th-hour maneuverings. Whereas Bowe is sticking around via a five-year deal, Albert will be due $9.83 million once he signs his one-year tender. The sides have until mid-July to reach a long-term agreement, but the Chiefs may decide Albert's back issues make it best that he plays under a one-year deal. The move throws a wrench into the top of the draft, as Texas A&M LT Luke Joeckel no longer has an obvious home in Kansas City.

I had completely missed this little tidbit. This really does change the draft landscape.

So, how many of you guys can take this team seriously? I cannot... they have an above average defense and an average offense (and I am being generous).... they are decent but they are not an 8-0 caliber team! They have had such an easy road thus far... 8 games against non-playoff caliber teams (perhaps you could argue that the Cowboys are a playoff team, but they are marginal at best IMO)... And the biggest thing, today is the 5th straight game against a team with a backup QB starting for their opponent and the 2nd game where the opposition is playing its 3rd string QB!

I just don't see it... this team is all smoke and mirrors I think... Lets see them actually beat a good team before we start talking about them as anything more than the luckiest team in the NFL through the first half of the season!
