Bengals franchise player RE Michael Johnson does not expect to sign an extension before Monday's deadline. Analysis: "It's going to play out how it plays out," Johnson said in a Tuesday radio interview. "Play this year and worry about this stuff when the dust settles." As of now, Johnson, LE Carlos Dunlap and DT Geno Atkins are all ticketed for unrestricted free agency next offseason. It's hard to envision famously thrifty owner Mike Brown getting all three locked up.

Whatever happened to the Salary Minimums that were going to go into effect?

The Cincinnati Bengals offered DE Michael Johnson a five-year contract worth around $40 million, but the two sides were not able to reach an agreement before the deadline. Johnson will make $11.2 million this season.

How much does Miami pay him next year? Laughing

It must be awesome to look 5 years for 40M in the face and be like "umm, nope"...

Bengals RE Michael Johnson missed Friday's practice with a concussion and has yet to be medically cleared for Week 5. Analysis: Johnson hasn't been ruled out, but he's very much in danger of missing Sunday's tilt with the Patriots. It'd be a big loss for a Cincinnati pass rush that has disappointed so far in 2013. They only have nine sacks through four games after ranking fourth in the NFL in sacks in 2012. Johnson has been the Bengals' best outside-edge presence. Wallace Gilberry backs him up.

ESPN's Adam Caplan suggested on NFL Insiders Thursday that free agent DE Michael Johnson will command "maybe $10 million a year" on the open market. Analysis: Bengals coaches want Johnson back, per Caplan, but Cincinnati won't franchise tag him for the second straight year and seems unlikely to commit long term to Johnson after locking up Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins, and using a 2013 second-round pick on Margus Hunt. Johnson is athletic enough to drop into coverage and rush with his hand up, so he figures to be pursued by both 4-3 and 3-4 teams.

Damn that's a lot of cash. Dolphins? Laughing

Johnson inked a five-year, $43.75 million deal with the Bucs on Tuesday, including a guaranteed $24 million, Josina Anderson of ESPN reports. Analysis: Despite regressing to 3.5 sacks in 2013, Johnson notched a career-best 56 tackles (35 solo) with nine passes defended and two forced fumbles on the ledger. In five NFL campaigns, he's missed just one game, while racking up 26.5 sacks. He'll now act as a pass-rushing complement to defensive stalwarts Lavonte David and Gerald McCoy.

BAM!

I thought FA didn't start for a couple more hours... So this is just the deal offered by the Bucs, right? The actual signing of the deal is a formality at this point, then?

They could start negotiations last Saturday.

I think I'm glad I kept him. I think this helps his Fantasy value. There are a lot of guys to block on that defense.

why didn't he fit their scheme? 4-3 in cincy and 4-3 in Tampa? Hey Michael.. go get the QB... ok.

Maybe bc he didn't have Carlos Dunlap taking up all the attentino on the other side???

Right.. but he wasn't a LB or a safety... he was the DE in the tampa 2.. the 4-3 DE in the tampa 2... the Simeon Rice role.. the just go get the QB role... Same role he had in Cincy.

Good for him. He is much better at chasing QBs when he is wearing orange. Color is important.

Worked out very nicely for him. Go to a shit team, get PAID, stay for a year and play like shit, get cut, go back to your favorite team.

Hopefully he'll actually try this year.

One piece of positive injury news:

A league source confirmed to PFT that RE Michael Johnson suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain in Sunday's training camp practice.

"He's expected to be back in four weeks," PFT's Mike Florio wrote. If Johnson is indeed back in one month -- and not the long side of his 4-6 week timetable -- he should get in a week or two of practice before the season opener.

This will dip into the regular season. He is a big man, I bet it will take 6-8 weeks.
